OVERVIEW
Tshepang Electrical, in collaboration with Ridge Park Sports Club, has joined
hands to lend a helping hand to an exciting
and upcoming project named uSisi Omkhulu.
This project forms part of our bigger
picture that strives to assist the needy and neglected people in our community
by providing them with the means to improve their living conditions.
Providing adequate skills and equipment to individuals in our communities
is a reliable approach to eliminating poverty and its harmful effects.
Moreover, once
these adequate skills and equipment are acquired, they open doors to entrepreneurial opportunities that boost the confidence of individuals to become financially independent.
The skill of sewing is one of the most practical tools and mediums. Its basic elements and techniques can be grasped by proper professional training.
Furthermore, this skill can aid individuals
with strong entrepreneurial instincts to pursue business ventures within
these wings. industry, which this project uSisi Omkhulu seeks to achieve.
uSisi Omkhulu, meaning Big Sister, is a
name that provides a feeling of comfort and safety. Just as one would prefer to
share concerning issues and worries with a big sister, this project aims to
provide a nurturing environment to learn what better way to acquire sewing
skills and techniques through this initiative than from the
Big Sister.
BACKGROUND
uSisi Omkhulu is a community based project that aids in
encouraging community life by assisting to
create a healthy, self-sustainable community. This project provides individuals
with sewing skills to produce completed articles of a high enough quality to
sell or swap, as well as the ability to conduct basic repairs and maintenance
on sewing machines for others within and around the neighborhood.
PROJECT GOAL
The project aims to equip individuals with sewing skills and basic
entry-level repair and maintenance skills for
sewing machine repairs. In addition, the project aims to uplift and encourage
a good self-image and share the benefits of keeping records of sales and expenses.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives are:
- To identify unemployed individuals from different communities from wards within the same proximity
- Negotiates election criteria requirements with ward councillors for the prospective trainees.
- Up skill chosen individuals in the art of sewing or up skill them in servicing and repairing sewing machines at a basic entry level
- Impart entrepreneurial skills for trainees to seek new opportunities after completing the training.
- Provide a meal (food & beverage) during the duration of the training. • Provide transportation for candidates who have been selected for the training.
- Upon successfully completing the training sessions, students will receive a comprehensive start-up kit and all necessary equipment to successfully use the skills acquired during the training to generate income.
STRATEGY
The pre-training selection procedure and
execution of training are vital components to offer a successful
training outcome.
Thorough attention to detail needs to be considered to both.
TRAINING MANAGEMENT
The project will be managed by a team of qualified individuals:
Amanda
Shaw, Mathebe Aphane, Elaine Lockard, Bianca Vulindlu and Megan Yorke, who come
from various professional backgrounds.
The team will manage and oversee the project's
operations by taking care of every possible
component, resources, risks, and laying the foundation of the project to
getting individuals to work for a shared goal.
This project's successful completion
relies on having experienced and qualified trainees to teach the students.
These are Megan Yorke, who has 32 years of experience in the sewing industry
and Greg Yorke, who has over 45 years of technical expertise in the
sewing industry.
They will manage the training course for the selected candidates.
Their expertise will
provide excellent value to the successful completion and running of the
project.
In addition, they will train and
encourage the students to gain as much knowledge as possible to be come adequate sewists and sewing machine technicians.
MONITORING
This training course focuses on
interactive learning in a relaxed and pleasant environment. The classes
are structured to ensure a hands-on learning experience where as much individual
attention is given as possible.
FRAMEWORK
The following framework is covered in every lesson for the sewing machine technicians:
- Conducting machine setup, identifying problems, troubleshooting, repairs and preventive maintenance.
- Reading and interpreting manuals to perform required maintenance and service.
- Diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, and test and adjust equipment.
- Use various relevant hand and power tools, electric meters and material handling equipment.
- Sew off the completed machine and test all sewing functions.
This
will ensure that they can use the start-up kits provided to them at the end of
the training.
COMPLETION
When each session is concluded, the success of the project needs to be
evaluated
Has the project achieved its goal and purpose in training the
students to become sewists or sewing machine technicians?
For three(3) months, follow-ups will be performed regularly on the candidates who have successfully completed the training and received their start-upkits.

conducted to see whether or not the received kits, learnt skills and techniques are being used for their intended purpose of assisting enterprising individuals in selling their products produced or rendering out technical services. In addition, a record will be kept of candidates, identifying those who have kept their kits and used this and their newly acquired skills to receive a financial income to sustain themselves and those who have sold their kits or traded them for another gain. This will assist in outlining the sustainability and the impact the project has on the candidates and their community after completing the training.

· Provide professional support and motivate successful candidates
to use their machinery and learn the skills efficiently.
· Recognizes and understands the corporate
environment and its cultural impact on the project from external and internal
sources.
· Produces clear status reports and communications that
are candid and tactful.
It is essential to follow up when the
successful candidates have completed training to track their progress
and how they have implemented what they learned from the project—getting
feedback after the fact is essential and will assist in achieving a productive framework.
